첫 번째 앨범의 커버에는 고치에 쌓인 형체가 실려있다. Aurora Aksnes는 나비이기보단 나방이고 싶다고 말한다. 나방은 나비보다 더욱 절제되고, 그림자가 짙으며, 동일하게 눈에 띄지만 좀 더 불명확하다. 이것은 AURORA와 완벽하게 어울리는 비유다. 노르웨이 베르겐의 피오르가 있는 산맥에서 자란 22살의 AURORA는 독자적이면서도 베를린부터 브라질까지 뻗어있는 팬 층의 유대감 사이의 균형을 잘 맞춘다. 그녀는 지금까지 2억 이상의 스트리밍 기록을 보유하고 있다.
2016년에 나온 데뷔 앨범 [All My Demons Treating Me As A Friend]는 그녀를 사냥꾼의 달, 얼어붙은 강과 늑대들 같은 초자연적인 영역을 노래하는 걸 두려워하지 않는 아티스트로서, 장대한 서사 알트 팝의 달인으로서 자리잡게 만들었다. 2018년 두 번째로 발매한 [Infections of a Different Kind]는 예기치 못한 전세계적인 찬사를 끌어낸 작품이다. 이 앨범으로 AURORA 사운드의 폭은 더욱 확장되었는데, 이는 32명의 합창단과 함께 한 ‘It Happened Quiet’와 트립합 분위기의 ‘Churchyard’ 곡에서 더욱 잘 드러난다.
그리고 이제 3번째 작품인 [Different Kind Of Human]가 태세를 갖췄다. 과거 작품들과 마찬가지로 놀랍지만 보다 실험적이며, 생태주의 붕괴와 만연한 개인주의 속에서 여전히 AURORA식 희망에 초점을 맞추고 있는 곡들의 총체이다. AURORA는 사람들이 가사에서 “단순히 말로 그치는 것 이상의 것, 우리가 살고 있는 지금 세상에 무언가 행동을 불러 일으킬 무언가”를 느낄 수 있길 원한다. 데뷔 앨범은 AURORA 내면의 결함을 스스로 알아가는 것에 대한 작업이었다면, 두 번째 앨범은 다른 사람들도 그렇게 할 수 있도록 돕는 작업이었고, 세 번째 앨범은 서로가 힘을 북돋아 함께 맞서 싸울 수 있게 하고 있다.
“제 첫 번째 앨범은 감정적인 작업의 연속이었어요.” 그녀는 설명한다. “온갖 내면적인 싸움에서 스스로를 받아들이고 놓아주었는데, 그건 굉장히 에너지의 소모가 큰 일이었죠. 저는 많은 사람이 자신의 감정에 대해 이야기하는 걸 어려워하는 걸 알고 있어요. 특히 노르웨이 사람들이 그렇고, 나이가 많은 세대일수록 더욱 그렇죠. 그런 모습을 보는 건 굉장히 가슴이 아파요. 사실 스스로를 힘들게 하는 것에 대해 이야기하는 건 자신의 영혼을 치유하는 것과도 같거든요.”
AURORA에게 가장 중요한 목적은 자신을 진실된 상태로 유지하는 것이다. 음악적 스타일에서 변화가 일어날 때조차 말이다. 당신이 남들을 신경 쓰지 않고 불빛만을 쫓아가는 나방이든, 화려하고 외향적인 나비이든 간에 AURORA는 당신의 영혼을 채워줄 수 있을 것이다. 그리고 그녀 자신의 영혼도 채울 것이다. “음악은 연료가 되어야 한다고 생각해요.”그녀는 말한다. “사람을 겨냥한 것이 아닌 우리 내면의 불을 지필 수 있도록요.”
Like the cocooned creature she portrayed on the cover of her first album, Aurora Aksnes says she would rather be a moth than a butterfly. It makes perfect sense: moths are the butterfly’s more understated, darker shadow, equally striking but less obvious. They’re a perfect fit for AURORA, the 22-year-old raised among the fjords and mountains of Bergen in Norway, who balances her sense of singularity with the deep bond she has with a fanbase stretching from Berlin to Brazil, who have supported her with 200 million streams and counting.
Released in 2016, AURORA’s debut album All My Demons Treating Me As A Friend positioned her as an artist unafraid to draw on the supernatural (think hunter’s moons, frozen rivers and wolves), while also mastering epic alt-pop. With her second record, Infections of a Different Kind - surprise-released to widespread plaudits in 2018 - she increased the breadth of her sound, via the choral crescendos of It Happened Quiet - featuring a 32-piece choir - and Churchyard’s trip-hop-inspired chills. Now, she’s released her third opus: A Different Kind Of Human. It’s a collection that's as astounding as her past releases, yet more experimental still, focusing in on ecological crisis, the consequences of rampant individualism, and AURORA’s hope that listeners will take its lyrics as “more than just words, but something [to] bring them into action into the world that we live in now”. If her debut album was about identifying your own demons, Infections of a Different Kind was, she says, about helping others to do the same, with A Different Kind of Human increasing this sense of empowerment, and banding together as “an army”.
“From my first album, it’s been about the emotional process,” she explains. “Accepting and freeing yourself of all the inner battles, which can be quite energy consuming. I've seen a lot of people struggle to talk of emotions, especially in Norway, and especially the older generation. It's really heartbreaking to see because it's medicine to the soul to talk about things that give you pain”.
For AURORA, the main goal is staying true to herself, even when she’s changing things up sonically.

In Korea, she has opened for 'HONNE' and 'Cherokee' and her music has been introduced on various music sites such as Naver, Naver Onstage, Melon, Bugs, and Genie.
