Buck Meek
빅 시프의 리드 기타리스트 벅 믹은 그의 새로운 솔로 앨범 [Haunted Mountain]을 위해 Adam Brisbin (기타), Austin Vaughn (드럼), Ken Woodward (베이스), Mat Davidson (페달 스틸 & 보컬), Dylan Meek (키보드)와 함께 텍사스의 Sonic Ranch 스튜디오에서 2주의 시간을 보냈다. Davidson이 프로듀서로, Adrian Olsen이 엔지니어링과 믹스로 그의 세 번째 앨범에 함께 했다.
[Haunted Mountain]은 사랑과 다른 어떤 것에 대한 이야기다. 사랑보다 더 크고, 충만하며 그런 충만함을 추구하는 영혼에 대한 것이다. 그의 노래들에서 사랑은 종종 자연스러운 형태를 취하다가도 이따금 인위적이게 되기도 하고, 때로는 우주적인 형태를 취하기도 한다. 연인과 교감하고 서로를 바라보고 또 때때로 서로가 되기도 하는 마음이다. 로맨스만이 [Haunted Mountain]가 탐구하는 유일한 사랑의 형태인 건 아니다.
앨범의 곡들은 산에서 만들어졌다. 쌀쌀했던 봄날의 에스트렐라산, 키클라데스 제도 화산 섬 밀로스, 스위스 알프스의 Onsernone 계곡 그리고 이제는 벅의 집이 된 산타모니카까지 모두 그의 새로운 사랑이 태어난 곳들이다. 벅은 “사랑은 당신 주변에 머무르며, 활기를 불어 넣고, 당신 주위의 모든 것들에 의미를 부여합니다”고 덧붙인다. 그리고 [Haunted Mountain] 질문한다. “사랑은 마법의 한 형태인가요?”
For his new solo album, Buck Meek, lead guitarist of Big Thief, went back to Texas with his band – Adam Brisbin (guitar), Austin Vaughn (drums), Ken Woodward (bass), Mat Davidson (pedal steel, vocals), and Dylan Meek (keys) - to record the songs that make up Haunted Mountain over two weeks at Sonic Ranch. Produced by Davidson and engineered and mixed by Adrian Olsen, the album follows 2018's Buck Meek and 2021’s Two Saviors, with Big Thief records inbetween - U.F.O.F / Two Hands (2019), and Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You (2022).
Haunted Mountain is about love and... something other. Something bigger than love, a soulfulness, or a soul seeking fullness. In the songs, five co-written alongside longtime friend and musical hero Jolie Holland and one set to Judee Sill’s final journal entry, love often assumes a natural form, sometimes it becomes artificial, sometimes cosmic. It is a consciousness here, interacting with the lovers, watching them sometimes, becoming them sometimes. Yet romance is not the only form of love Haunted Mountain explores.
The songs were written in mountains; cold springs in the Serra da Estrela of Portugal, the submerged volcano of Milos in the Cyclades, Valle Onsernone in the Swiss Alps, the Santa Monica range Buck now calls home - all where his new love was born. “Love inhabits your environment, animates the inanimate, charging everything around you with a sense of meaning,” Meek says. Haunted Mountain asks, "is love a form of magic?"
