Novo Amor

여러 해 전 뉴욕 북부의 상록수로 둘러싸인 호수에서 보낸 여름은 첫 EP [Woodgate, NY] 뿐만 아니라 그의 데뷔 앨범 <Birthplace (2018)>과 후속작 <Cannot Be, Whatsoever (2020)>를 만드는데 사용할 영감과 이미지를 모두 제공하였다. 우드게이트에서의 여름캠프 이후 그는 많은 변화를 가지고 고향 웨일즈로 돌아왔다. 카디프에 있는 그의 집은 일부는 집이면서 일부는 스튜디오였고, 길 건너편 파티에서 들리는 먼 수다소리, 옆집 건물 부지에 모인 Bonfire Night의 불꽃놀이와 갈매기들은 그의 앨범 <Birthplace>에 스며들었다.
2018년 데뷔 앨범 발매와 투어 이후 그는 곧 바로 다음 앨범 작업에 착수하기 위해 스튜디오 공사를 진행했다. 어질러지고 해체되고 미결된 상태로부터 정제된 환경으로 복귀하는 이러한 과정이 고스란히 앨범에 담겨 있다. <Cannot Be, Whatsoever>을 만들며, Lacey는 과거에 만들었던 조용한 희망과 그리움의 노래들을 돌아봤다.
“<Birthplace>를 상상하면 여전히 뉴욕 주 북부의 호수를 볼 수 있어요. 저는 이젠 실제로 더 이상 존재하지 않는 그곳을 낭만적으로 묘사했고, 이 노래들은 그 장소에 격리되어 있죠. 그와 비교해 신곡들은 직접적이고 시끄러우며 낙관적입니다. 만약 <Birthplace>가 시골이라면, <Cannot Be, Whatsoever>는 도시인 셈입니다.”
Ali Lacey began Novo Amor as a project of sorts - an act of defiance in the wake of a break-up, but along the way, quite unexpectedly, he found something rich and rewarding.
Years ago, a summer spent by an evergreen-surrounded lake in upstate New York supplied both the impetus and imagery that he would use to craft his debut album ‘Birthplace’ (2018), and the follow-up, ‘Cannot Be Whatsoever’ (2020) in a house in Cardiff that was part-home, part-studio, a place where the distant chatter of a party across the street, Bonfire Night fireworks and the seagulls that congregate on the building site next door bled into his recordings.
With ‘Cannot Be, Whatsoever’, Lacey contemplated a past soundtracked by songs of quiet hope and longing. “I can still see the lake upstate when I picture ‘Birthplace’, the songs sheltered by this place I’ve romanticised that doesn’t actually exist anymore. These new songs feel immediate and noisy in comparison, almost optimistic. If ‘Birthplace’ is the countryside, then ‘Cannot Be, Whatsoever’ is the city.”
