시드는 늘 무언가를 만들어왔다. 15세 때 녹음과 엔지니어링, 음악 제작 방식을 스스로 깨우쳤으며, 18세 때 타일러 더 크리에이터(Tyler, the Creator), 프랭크 오션(Frank Ocean)이 소속된 오드 퓨처(Odd Future)의 창립 멤버로서 월드 투어를 마쳤다. 그 후 Matt Martians와 함께한 디 인터넷(The Internet)과 솔로 앨범을 포함한 6개의 앨범을 성공적으로 발매하고 여러 차례 그래미 시상식의 후보로 지명됐다.
2017년 발매한 솔로 데뷔 앨범 [Fin]의 승리에 도취하지 않은 채, 지난 몇 년 동안 점차 문화적 주도 세력으로 자리 잡았다. 그래미 시상식에 후보로 지명된 그의 밴드 디 인터넷은 평단의 지지를 얻은 4번째 앨범 [Hive Mind]를 발매했고, 드레이크(Drake)의 ‘Nice For What’ 뮤직비디오에 출연했으며, ‘라이언 킹’의 사운드트랙인 비욘세(Beyonce)의 노래 ‘Otherside’를 작곡했다. 제인 말리크(Zayn), 릴 우지 버트(Lil Uzi Vert), 켈라니(Kehlani), 디스클로져(Disclosure), 캘리 롤랜드(Kelly Rowland), 샬롯 데이 윌슨(Charlotte Day Wilson)과 협업하고 그녀의 고향인 로스앤젤레스에 녹음 스튜디오를 만들었으며, 루이비통의 버질 아블로(Virgil Abloh)의 요청으로 광고에 출연하기도 했으며 발렌티노의 수석 디자이너 피에르 파올로 피치올리(Pierpaolo Piccioli)와 함께 ‘파리 패션 위크’에서 일했으며, 퍼렐(Pharrell Williams)과 함께 아디다스 캠페인에 참여하였다. 이 모든 과정을 통해 그녀는 감각적이고 미래 지향적인 R&B의 아이콘으로 남게 되었다.
Syd has always been creating. At 15 she taught herself how to record, engineer, and produce music; by 18 she had toured the world as a founding member of LA collective Odd Future (Tyler the Creator, Frank Ocean). Upon her return, she successfully branched off to form The Internet with partner Matt Martians, releasing 6 Major Label albums (2 solo) and receiving multiple Grammy nominations.
Since her 2017 solo debut, Fin, Syd has continued to be a major cultural force over the last few years, hardly resting on her laurels. Her GRAMMY-nominated band, THE INTERNET, released a critically acclaimed fourth album, Hive Mind; she appeared in Drake’s video for “Nice For What;” she wrote a song for Beyonce called “Otherside,” on the Lion King Soundtrack; she collaborated with Zayn, Lil Uzi Vert, Kehlani, Disclosure, Kelly Rowland, and Charlotte Day Wilson; she built a recording studio in her home of Los Angeles; she appeared in a Louis Vuitton ad at Virgil Abloh’s behest; she worked alongside Valentino’s head designer Pierpaolo Piccioli at Paris Fashion Week; she shot an Adidas campaign with Pharrell. Throughout it all, she has remained a master of sensual, future-forward R&B songs, writing, producing, and engineering all of her own work.
That’s just Syd the artist; Syd the entrepreneur started and ran a studio in LA, as well as a charity that services Los Angeles youth. She also works closely with tech and product entrepreneurs on new ventures. These include Sapere Wines, a black/female run and co-founded boutique wine company making sparkling rosé in Napa, as well as being a founding member of mediation and wellness DAO $UEMS, Universe Eaters Meditation Society. This tight-knit collective of artists and creatives are leveraging Web3 tools to further mental wellness.
